Glenapp Estate Dairy Unit, Ballantrae, Girvan, South Ayrshire

KA26 0PD

Join us for an open meeting as we revisit Glenapp Dairy Unit, the host venue of the DairyCo Monitor Farm from 2013 to 2016. Estate Factor and Farm Manager, Charlie Russell, will share insights on the changes that have taken place over the last three years.

Charlie will be joined by fellow dairy farmers Rory Christie of Dourie Farm, and Graham Armstrong of Kirvennie Farm, who will provide details of the ‘FastBreeder’ working group, a project to investigate how to accelerate genetic gain for grazing cows that suit local conditions.

Attendees will find out more about:

  • How they extended their dairy unit to accommodate an additional 400 cows
  • How centralised housing has enabled increased days at grass for their herd
  • The aims of the breeding programme and the work being conducted
  • Project specifics on how they will use genomic testing, combined with herd data, to accurately rank the cows and trial some of the best reproductive technologies, such as large-scale embryo transfer, to breed from only the best cows.

Speakers:       Charlie Russell - Glenapp Estate Factor & Farm Manager

Professor Mike Coffey - SRUC Head of Animal Breeding and Genomics

                       Connor Brown - SRUC Geneticist
