AHDB board and minutes
The AHDB Board consists of ten members: the Chairs for each of the six sector organisations, and four independent members, one of whom is the Chair. Their appointments are for a period of up to four years from 1 April 2008.
John Bridge was appointed as Chair Designate in October 2006 and the majority of the rest of the board appointed in February 2007 to implement the process of levy board reform and take forward a review of the needs of the industry known as the Fresh Start review. Up until the vesting day for the new body on 1 April 2008, the board operated on a shadow basis.

Appointment details
Selection and appointment of the members of the board is carried out under the rules of the Office for the Commissioner for Public Appointments (OCPA).
Board and CEO Remuneration
Board Members’ remuneration is based on a day rate of £300 (set by Defra in 2007) which is calculated into an annual fee, using amortised historical data. Board Members are paid monthly in arrears, and a system is in place to ensure that payment is for time devoted to Board work. The annual rates are as follows:
- Sector Chairs - £48,000
- Independent Members - £16,000
Board members are also able to claim reasonable travel expenses.
The AHDB Chairman’s remuneration is based on a day rate of £500 (set by Defra in 2006) which is calculated into an annual fee of £95,000, paid monthly in arrears, and a system is in place to ensure that payment is for time devoted to Board work
The Board operates a Remuneration Committee which has the responsibility to (i) Advise Defra on the Remuneration of AHDB Board Members; (ii) set the remuneration for the Sector Board Members; (iii) advise the Board, in consultation with Defra, on the performance objectives and remuneration terms linked to these objectives for the AHDB Chief Executive; (iv) advise the Board on the total remuneration packages for the senior managers in the AHDB Group, including pay benefits and pension arrangements.
The Chief Executive of AHDB, who joined the organisation on 1 May 2010,ispaid an annualsalary of£150,000. This salary level was discussed and agreed with Defra and Defra Ministers in early 2010 and, at the Minister’s request, an open letter explaining the package in detail was written to the Secretary of State.
