Succcession for farming businesses

Succession is a major and common issue for many farm businesses. In the case of Truro Monitor farm, Howard’s daughter has decided she would like to return and be involved in the family farm. What are the issues? Can an extra salary be afforded? What are the options to generate more income? Led by Savills Consultant Adrian Mathews, breakout groups will put forward proposals. Adrian will then show the group how to go about conducting a proper financial appraisal on which to base sound investment decisions as the farm develops to accommodate the additional family member.

About the farm

Howard and Anne Emmett farm in partnership near Truro in Cornwall. The all-arable unit extends to 192ha with a further 49ha contract farmed. All operations are carried out in hand including ploughing and min-till. Medium and heavy soils over shillet support a rotation including winter wheat, winter and spring barley and spring oilseed rape and beans. The farm has extensive grain storage and Anne also runs a tea room on the farm. Howard and Anne's objectives are to grow and increase the profitability of the farm.
