Disease investigations rule out notifiable diseases

Friday, 1 July 2022

You will most likely be aware that disease investigations were carried out last week at a single pig unit in East Anglia. We are all relieved that the tests quickly ruled out the notifiable diseases Foot-and-Mouth disease and Swine Vesicular Disease.

Latest updates from Defra on the case can be found here.

However, scares like this serve as a reminder that unexplained lameness or blisters (particularly around the snout or top of the hoof) must be reported to your vet or Defra immediately.

The team from AHDB has been working closely with the industry and playing its part in ensuring a joined up approach to the control of disease threat.

We continue to work with the Pig Veterinary Society (PVS), National Pig Association (NPA), British Pig Association (BPA) and Defra to promote increased biosecurity on all pig farms.

We are also supporting the message that any producers who see any unexplained lameness in any age of pig should speak to their vet or report it to Defra to enable those diseases to be ruled out.

This is also a timely reminder to sign up to the Significant Diseases Charter if you haven’t already done so.
