Permitted pig farms reach highest compliance banding

Monday, 7 August 2023

The Environment Agency (EA) reports that Environmental Permitting Regulation (EPR) compliance in both the pig and poultry sectors is on the rise, and the overall picture is encouraging.

In each of the last three calendar years, more than 97% of farms inspected were in the highest possible compliance bands.

Compliance is based on a calculation of any permit breaches noted during an inspection and being categorised according to their potential, or actual, negative environmental impact.

The EA advises farmers that to maintain this high rate of compliance, they should avoid the most common permit breaches, such as:

  • Written management systems, e.g. no system, out of date, missing records
  • Containment of stored materials, e.g. oil tank bunds, disinfectant storage and use
  • Site drainage systems, e.g. diverter valve timings, blocked pipework and overflows, lack of kerbing

Further information is available via Environmental Permitting Regulations.
